What is PSC?

  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Progressive inflammatory disease of bile ducts leading to blockages, and usually liver failure.
  • Thought to be autoimmune, no known causes.
  • No known cure or disease-altering medication.
  • Definitive treatment is a liver transplant.
  • 2007 German study of 273 patients [1]:
    Median survival from the time of diagnosis to death or liver transplantation was approx. 10 years.

Organ donation facts in Australia

  • Australia is a world leader for successful transplant outcomes.
  • Not so good regarding donation rate; but it is getting better.
  • One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people.

  • Less than 1% of people die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is possible.

  • The family of every potential donor will be asked to confirm the donation decision of their loved one before donation can proceed.

Organ donation facts in Australia

  • In 2014, 378 organ donors donated to 1,117 transplant recipients.
  • The Australian donation rate was 16.1 donors per million people (dpmp).
  • The Queensland donation rate was 15.0 dpmp [1].
  • We are far behind the leader (Spain, 35.3 dpmp [2]), and also the US (27 dpmp [3]).
